- Male character has gone through breakup
- He turns to alcohol, drugs and violence
- He battles with him self and his own mind
- The previous events lead to a tragic ending
Why have I chosen to follow this narrative?
I am following this narrative because I feel it is appropriate to the lyrics of the song and after a lyrical analysis, I believe this to be an accurate statement. Moreover, sad tones and themes I have more experience depicting as I have had previous projects in which used a dark atmosphere and tone to construct a narrative. Because I am familiar with creating this tone, I will be able to experiment with it more and try out new techniques to potentially create something unconventional yet effective.
The Main Shots I Plan to Use and Why
- Mid-shots - So emotion is apparent which the effect of distance between the audience and character
- Close ups - To emphasise emotion towards the end; helping build tension before the climax
- Establishing/master shots - Juxtaposition between the insignificance of the artiste to the world around him (Unconventional but I am aiming to show the artiste in a vulnerable light to conform with the tone and mood of the song)
- Low angle to start with, moving into higher angle shots - This is to show the deterioration of power he has; especially over himself.
The Production
Primarily, the filming will be done be an iPhone 8 plus camera. I feel this is a good option because various lenses can be fitted to exterior of the phone and it can record at a high resolution and frame rate which in turn facilitates a smoother video which will come out more professional in post production.
Some of my filming locations are unaccessible for my phone so I will be using my Thieye action camera which films at similar resolutions and frame rates as the phone. I will require this camera so I can mount it to objects to achieve high angle shots. Moreover, I will require it to shoot some underwater scenes. This camera is also good for achieving POV shots.
To conclude, the overall feel of the video will be dark with a sad tone to reflect the characters feelings. From the original "Wicked Games" video, I will be trying to recreate a similar greyscale colour tone but with a twist; I will be juxtaposing the greyscale with bright colour to reflect the light inside him trying to break through. Moreover, these colours are becoming increasingly common in modern hip/hop and some R&B videos. In the original video, I also liked the use of direct address from the artiste whilst he essentially told us a story with the lyrics.
