Production Company name/logo/ethos

I have decided to use the same production company that I did for my horror film trailer that I made two years ago for GCSE and the same one I used last year for my film opening as I feel that it sounds good and links to my own name. The company is called ‘Patient Productions’. As an independent company; our ethos and sole aim is to immerse audiences and bring them cinematic enjoyment. The uses and gratifications theory could link in here. In terms of watching a music video, the uses and gratifications I feel to be relevant are;

Learn and educate – This is because modern music videos have been shown to help tackle real life problems or raise awareness of them such as "1-800-273-8255" by Logic which tackles suicide. Audiences may also watch music videos to get a better understanding of the meaning of the song.

Escape reality – As with any video; people watch them to escape their daily lives to be immersed into an alternated reality of the characters or people they are watching. With music videos, the audience may watch them to see their favourite artistes in action.

Entertain – This is very important to Patient Productions because we want our audiences to enjoy themselves when watching our videos.

Social interaction – If our music videos reach high levels of success, word of mouth will be a key factor with people telling friends and family about them and then encouraging them to watch them. Sites such as YouTube enable audiences to easily access our videos when they want to at anytime of day.

However, because Patient Productions is an independent company; It will most likely need to synergise with a bigger production company to help distribute the product. For example, collaborating with one of the oligopoly or another distributer such as MTV.

Audience screening/feedback

 The Test Screening

I decided to hold the test screening in a cinema room so the music video could be exploited to its full cinematic potential with an immersive screen and sound system.

Below are some feedback forms from after the showing. They were completed electronically as it was easy for me to collect the information this way.

Similar feedback was apparent from multiple forms. Since the areas of strength and weakness were similar; I had a clear cut idea of what I needed to change from the rough cut going into the final production.
This was is an example of one feedback form I received after the final cut was shown to the same audience. I agree with this feedback/criticisms; but due to filming and acting and directing everything on my own, it left me limited in terms of the camera movements I could perform.

After receiving the feedback forms back, I wanted to ask an additional question; "Was the narrative clear" and from some verbal feedback, my audience said that the narrative was easy to follow and the lyrics often were represented with the visuals.

Rough Cuts

Unfortunately, I cannot access my rough cut as it was deleted whilst clearing space for my final cut so I could create a higher resolution video. Because I cannot display my rough cut, I will be outlining it below.

Main ideas/Concepts displayed/extra details

  • The rough cut was roughly around 3 minutes long (2 minutes shorter than the final cut)
  • The video was mainly set around a beach setting/location
  • Main themes shown were dark (Drowning)
  • Overall tone was sad
  • The cuts were quite long - Unfitting for the genre but fitted well for the song (Combine a mixture of both in the final cut.
  • There was a lack of lip syncing in the cut and parts were not synced up very well.
I was able to recover some photos from my days shooting at the locations where the rough cut was primarily situated.

Editing Diary

To edit my music video; there are two applications I am using; Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro x

FINAL CUT PRO X
I will be using this software to edit the bulk of my video as I have experience using this programme and I am familiar with its layout and capabilities.

PREMIERE PRO
I am using this software to create the graphics for my video as it offers a wider range of effects than Final Cut Pro X

MOTION 5
I am using this piece of software to create filters, effects and transitions for my music video.

Reshoots

Prelim Filming

Reshoots were required after the initial preliminary filming due to lip syncing not matching up with the lyrics of the song; I decided a reshoot was necessary because the original footage when edited look unprofessional due to this issue.

After the reshoot, this problem was solved.

Filming the pool scenes (day time)

I needed to reshoot these scenes because the previous footage was shaky from pressure underwater. To fix this, I used somebody to hold the camera down on a tripod for some of the long shots underwater. When I wanted to use low angle shots, I had to rest the camera at the bottom of the pool. During the reshoots I also thought it would be a good idea to experiment with some shots of me 'drowning'; I achieved this by mounted my camera to the side of the pool, just under the waters surface.

          Night time

I decided to also do some reshoots at night time in the pool so that I could achieve a more diverse range of              shots in a different setting. This shoot did have some complications as the pool was not heated at this stage so the pool was freezing; the filming had to be rushed.

Long distance filming (beach)

I filmed some footage on the beach as there was an opportunity to film some cool shots here but when it came to editing together a rough cut, there were some shots which I felt were missing. Because the location was quite far away, a reshoot was difficult but I achieved it; getting the shots I felt I needed.

Digipak photoshoot

After the initial shoot, I felt the pictures I had captured were not appropriate to the final outcome I had in mind. After this, an extra two shoots took place to get some images that I was happy with using. Some of my digipak photos are from when I filmed the pool scenes.

Music Video Lip Syncing

I decided to shoot all my lip syncing scenes separate to the rest of the video so I had a clear cut plan of what I had done and what I needed to do. The reshoot was needed because some of the lip syncing was out of time so when reshooting I decided to place the lyrics behind the camera with the song playing to enable more accurate lip syncing.

Music Taste

Music Taste

Growing up in the 00’s, I was saturated with cheesy pop music and some might suggest that I have never experienced what proper music is growing up -  but what does that mean? Music is such a diverse point of discussion!

Currently I’d say I have a very dynamic and evolving taste in music which adapts to contemporary changes within the industry but I still have an ‘old soul’. Some of my favourite artistes include;

  • Radiohead
  • Queen
  • Eminem
  • Kendrick Lamar
  • Michael Jackson
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • David Bowie
  • Fleetwood Mac
  • Ed Sheeran
  • The Weeknd

Working/filming on my own

Why?

I decided to work on my own for various reasons, the main ones being:

  • I am able to complete tasks as and when I feel it is appropriate
  • I am able to take this project in the direction I would like to
  • Any reshoots can be achieved easily without the need to arrange a date where everyone in a group is available.

The Outcome

Although I still support my choice to work alone; it was a hard process in terms of filming, acting and directing the video without any help. This has both advantageous and disadvantageous consequences:

Advantages

  • I was forced to be creative with my filming due to a lack of resources which lead to some cool ideas
  • I was able to perform multiple reshoots quickly
  • I was able to use all my ideas and determine which influences I wanted to use

Disadvantages

  • Cinematography was quite simplistic; without dynamic camera movements - Any camera movements had to be artificially created during post production.
  • Some shots' depth of field were off (Out of focus)
  • Camera angles were limited due to a lack of a camera person and equipment.

Evaluation marking

I liked George's first evaluation which clearly demonstrates a link between his own video and real videos of a similar genre. George...
